The Maltese Islands, although very small in area, host a very large number of endemic species, some of which are unique.  These endemic species are of an importance to the Maltese Islands, since they now form part of the Maltese national heritage.

Around 4,500 species have so far been recorded, 78 of which are endemic. Several more endemic species are expected to be discovered in the coming years.
