Endemic Maltese Species

The Maltese Wall Lizard
The Maltese Islands, although very small in area, host a very large number of endemic species, some of which are unique.  These endemic species are of an importance to the Maltese Islands, since they now form part of the Maltese national heritage.

Around 4,500 species have so far been recorded, 78 of which are endemic. Several more endemic species are expected to be discovered in the coming years.

The Maltese Freshwater Crab
Twenty three of the endemic species are plants, while the other fifty five endemic species are animals.

The Maltese Wall Lizard and The Maltese Freshwater Crab are an example of two endemic animals.
