Maltese Freshwater Crab

Picture
The Maltese Freshwater Crab, Qabru in Maltese, can grow up to 80 mm in width.  It is greenish-grey, with some occasional orange-yellow patches.

The crab is found wherever there is freshwater throughout the year.  In Malta, it is mainly found in Baħrija, Imtaħleb and San Martin, while in Gozo it is mainly found in the Lunzjata Valley.

The Maltese Freshwater Crab is carnivorous and feeds on smaller animals such as the tadpole.  It usually feeds after sunset.

Pollution of water, drying up of streams and its capture by humans are unfortunately threatening its number.
